As pastors, we have been given by Christ to the church not only to do ministry, but to equip believers for their ministries (Ephesians 4:11-12). But, what ministries?
Let’s not limit our scope to church programs. Why not think about equipping the members of our churches for their most crucial relationships in everyday life?
Many local churches already do this by providing training in marriage or parenting. Why not add grandparenting to our vision of equipping the saints for the work of ministry?
So, what might be involved in equipping grandparents for their ministry?
- Pray! Ask the Lord to stir up a holy hunger in the hearts of the grandparents in your local church.
- Study! What does God’s Word say about grandparenting? Explore Deuteronomy 4, Deuteronomy 6, Psalms 71, 78, and 145. 2 Timothy 1 and 3, Titus 2.
- Pursue! Might you be able to gather some potential grandparenting “champions” to pray, cast vision, and read a selected book on grandparenting?
- Teach! Plan a small group, class, or seminar on the subject of biblical grandparenting.
- Encourage! Celebrate what God is doing in the ministries of grandparents in your church.
By God’s grace, families and local churches will be strengthened for generations to come as we equip and mobilize grandparents for the glory of God.
