 <\/sup>“Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by ceasing to pray for you, and I will instruct you in the good and the right way.  <\/sup>Only fear the Lord and serve him faithfully with all your heart. For consider what great things he has done for you.” 1 Samuel 12:23,24<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My wife, Leona, and I have two daughters, and when they announced to us that we were going to become new grandparents, we were over the moon! I immediately asked for a copy of the first ultrasound pictures they received. Our office administrator kindly laminated the photo for my wallet so I could have a grandpa bragging photo. We had a great deal of fun with this because I would go around and ask people if I could show them a picture of my grandchild? When I whipped this picture out, I would always ask, \u201cDo you think they look more like their grandpa or grandma?\u201d Then I said: \u201cPretty cute grandkid waving at the camera, hey?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the verses above, Samuel (the man of God) felt the responsibility of prayer for others keenly. Along with this, he resolved to instruct Israel in the good and right way of fearing the Lord and serving Him faithfully with one\u2019s whole heart, in thankfulness. Being a prayerful and careful Christian grandparent comes with the same responsibility!<\/em><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As soon as I knew that I had a grandchild on the way, I started to pray for their healthy development and safe delivery and especially that they would come to know Jesus personally and walk with God all the days of their lives. I think this gave me a jump start on anticipating their arrival. I couldn\u2019t wait to meet them in person because I was aware that they were already a little person growing in their mother\u2019s womb. I genuinely started praying for my daughters and their unborn children every day. The result was that I was already beginning to feel love for these little gaffers (yet unborn) through my specific prayer for them, longing to meet them.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The impact of praying in anticipation for my new grandchildren also had a surprising effect on me. My prayer for them was changing me. I found myself feeling the responsibility before God to be the one to make a spiritual impact on them. In effect, God was moving me to be a small part of the answer to my prayer for them to know Jesus. I wanted to make a spiritual difference carefully and intentionally in their lives. I felt a genuine desire to teach them about Jesus, and I could imagine myself walking with them and holding their little hands as we would walk and talk about Jesus in the future. All of this was forming in my heart and mind even before they were born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the birth of one of my grandkids, my love and desire to impact their little heart and mind only grew with the greater joy of actually meeting this little person and holding them in my arms. I am still greatly anticipating the birth of another grandchild. I know already, though both of these kids are in the very beginning of their lives and I am closer to the end of mine, that by God\u2019s grace and in His design, I will be able to pass along a legacy of faith as I pray for God to do this amazing work in their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
