Capture the Moments (part 1)
Written by: Dan Hewson Legacy Coalition Canada
Have you ever been frustrated at missing that special shot or a one of a time moment because you didn’t have your camera handy? You missed the opportunity to capture that moment when your grandchild took their first step or that tender hug that had a powerful impact. You are not alone.
I have heard many people express the disappointment of not having their camera ready when those special moments occur and missed out on the opportunity to capture a great photograph. Although this is a common complaint it need not be a constant problem. Today’s Smart Phone cameras are portable and ready to capture those moments on the spot. Smartphone cameras are capable of producing some beautiful photos and video that are every bit as good as larger cameras. They allow you to capture images that you can share on your favourite social media site, make beautiful prints and slide shows right on your phone. Most smartphone camera apps that come bundled with your phone allow you to open the camera app and leave it open so you can be ready to capture that special moment quickly.
In the maze of it all no other subject has captured my heart than the moments created by my grandson. His way of expression that only he can communicate has changed the way I think in terms of documenting moments in his life that create lasting memories. I challenged myself to be intentional about documenting his life and capturing his endless expressions. I saw the beauty of Gods creation in a new light. How He has moulded each one of us differently and given us a unique personality and giftedness as He intended it to be. This little boy, has changed my life, the way I see things, the way I do things and my perspective on this Grandparenting journey that God has called me into. Photography is a wonderful tool to record precious moments in our families. I want to encourage Parents and Grandparents to capture precious memories for our families to look back on. Memories that will outlive us and will be there for future generations to enjoy.
How about you? Join me on this journey to leave a legacy of memories for our families and especially our grand children. You don’t have to be a pro photographer or have special training to have that mobile cam available and ready to capture the moment. All you have to do is be intentional about seeing opportunity as it occurs, pick up that camera and capture it. You won’t get them all, you won’t get every moment. However, you will get some of them and some of them will be real keepers.
Here are a few tips for you to start with:
- Use your phones native camera app that came bundled with your phone. Do not concern yourself with third party camera apps at this time.
- Use the auto settings on your phone camera. This allows you to concentrate on composition and getting that shot away.
- Remember not to be disappointed if you miss a moment. It happens. There will be more opportunities.
We will explore more about camera apps, camera settings and editing photos and video right on your smartphone in part 2 soon. Until then keep that snap happy camera handy and go capture those precious memories.
